Game of Thrones piracy still up and running!

HBO’s ultra successful TV series Game of Thrones has just finished it’s 4th season with an astonishing 7 million US viewers during the infamous season finale. However, it turns out that one of the most watched series on the television is also the most pirated series on the world wide web.

Torrentfreak shows us that more than 1 million people downloaded the highly anticipated Season 4 Premiere in less than half a day. People from across the globe decided to grab their own copy via the not-so-authorized – yet extremely popular – torrent website Kickass Torrents with more than 300.000 people sharing the episode simultaneously at its peak.

Due to its high popularity the HBO Go service crashed several times during both the season premiere and finale. This may have caused more people to grab their copy from other ‘online sources’.

Because of its immense success HBO has announced to renew the series for at least 2 more seasons. Looking at both the legal and ‘less authorized’ channels we believe that HBO will actually keep renewing the series until it catches us with George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books on which the series is based off.

RR Martin has stated that the series will end with book 7 while the sixth installment has yet to be released. Looking at that HBO decided to split the third book (A Storm of Swords) into 2 seasons we won’t be surprised if they eventually end up at season 10 with the TV series :-)
